BABY CARNIVAL.
The official opening of tli e Balby Carnival to raise funds for the Plunket Society took place at the Paaus'h Hall on Tuesday evening in the form ■of a dance, which was well' attended, the proceeds being divided between lire three candidates. A most enjoyable time was spent by those present, the success of the dance indicating that the promoters of the carnival Will be successful in their effort. The competition ba'bies are Town, “Baby Hudson”; Farmers, “Balby Saxon”; Mangahao, “Balby Matthews”; and already their respective committees are showing their keenness to place their candidate on top by arranging for the holding, of a series of dances; garden parties, street stalls, and competitions. ’As the Pliuiket Society has done invaluable gctod in Shannon weekly visits and have thus : gained tire sympathy ol a wide circle of the public, it is safe to anticipate the committee wiill obtain the results they desire.
The Town Baby Committee have arranged .to hold a children's fancy dress ball in the Druids’ Hall on Friday, March 19th. To-morrow (Saturday) the Farmers’ Baby Committee will, hold a street stall outside the Council Chambers, where produce and goods', of all descriptions can "be purchased. A. feature of the stall will be that tea and sandwiches and fruit salad will be obtainable in the, afternoon and evening in the Council Chambers and as farmers’ wives have a reputation as cooks the puiblic can be certain of getting a good deal. During the day the committee will conduct numerous competitions, to the winner's of which handsome and useful prizes will be awarded. On Tuesday evening the Farmers’ Baby Committee will hold a dance in the Druids’ Hall. (Provision has been made to provide dances for both old and young, also a number of novelty dances. As the price of admission is only ladies 1/6 and gents 2/6, a large attendance is expected.

The Farmers’ Babe’s a sturdy wight, But all the town think, luckily, Although he’ll make a 'sturdy fight, Hie hasn’t got a “Buckley!” The candidate from Mangahao Will Mgngahowl some more; We’ll pack him off to “’ohm, sweet ’ohm,” That’s one thing very sure ! • The town’s in this!, We have the one! He’s looking fine and dandy, And Mastei Hudson, ere lie’s done, Will knock the others bandy! —Spirit of Shakespeare (by medium of a local celebrity). Persons desiring lamb, for Sunday’s dinner can purchase samte at the Farmers’ Baby Stall on Saturday.
