NEW TARIFF DUTIES
AUSTRALIAN TEXTILE INDUSTRY ■ REVIVES. In the , House of Representatives, Mr. H. E Pratten (Minister for Trade and Customs) in opening a debate on new tariff duties, validating an Act passed last September authorising the collection of new duties for one year, said it was the earnest desire of the Government to see that further development of secondary industries should not be hampered. Six months had elapsed since the new duties had first been collected, and very considerable progress had been made in the industries affected. The new tariff had revised the whole textile industry and it load been given fresh hope Ml round. The Government’s action had been fully justified, through a large amount of additional employment having been found, and the projected new duties had also stopped the closing down of many Important engineering establishments, enabling the industry now to undertake a much greater proportion of the work required in Australia than previously. ,!•'•*! st{ If Parliament confirmed the duties he believed that W’ithin a year further textile factories would be established in the Commonwealth, by at least three of the leading British manufacturers. He concluded by suggesting that migration of industry would be linked with the migration of people
