MONTHLY MEETING. The above meeting w'as held In the Council Chamber lastt evening. The President (Mr A. E. Hyde) presided. CORRESPONDENCE. Erom N.Z. Sports Protection League asking that the Chamber should express its views on the question of daylight saving and forward same to the- member for the district and to the press.—Received. From the secretary of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce, stating that at a recent meeting of his Chamber mention was made of the postal clearance fee of 3d per packet on parcels coming through the Department on which duty was paid. Now the regulations have been extended 'and the charge of 3d per packet is also made where primage only is payable and also on batches of printed matter and on incidental packets, where the value is high enough to warrant duty being levied. Hjis Chamber considered the new regulations are oppressive and considers that primage does - not constitute Customs duty and that the 3d charge only he delivered on parcels and packages Adhere actual duty, is payalble.—Received. The Clerk of the Horowhenua County Council acknowledging receipt of letter from Chamber suggesting that when a motor is installed on , the Shannon punt the working hours of i the punt be extended to 11 p.m. on Week days. He stated that the matter had been before a recent meeting of his Council and had been referred to the Works Committee for consideration. ' From Shannon Borough Council with reference to the Chamber’s suggestion re the holding of a military camp at Shannon and asking for the use of the Domain Grounds for drilling,- etc., stating they were willing to! give ■ every assistance to further the idea, and wishing the Chamber success in their suggestion,—lt was decided to thank the' Council for their offer.

From Chief Post-master, Palmerston North, in reference to the Chamber's letter regarding mail facilities at Shannon Bating that the request cannot be complied with and pointed out that at present the staffat Shannon is fully employed and the bringing back of an officer .at night for the sole purpose of despatching a mail to Palmerston North by the 9 p.m. train -and the sorting of a, mail from Wellington so that, the private box holders may obtain delivery of correspondence the same evening instead of next morning is not warranted. It is pointed out that any person desirous of forwarding a letter to Palmerston North by the. 9 p.m. train may do so by posting it in the late fee box inthe guard’s- van of the train.—The President expressacY the opinion drat the town was being gradually deprived -of its rights in respect to postal facilities and it was time strong opposition was raised. He pointed out also that in certain parts of the borough there was now only one mail delivery a day and rthlis was causing much inconvenience, Mr Tippler moved that the member for the district be written to and, given an outline of What has been clone •by the Postal Department _in regard' to the mails, and request him to urge that the evening mail be restored and thait two deliveries of ma/its be uicide dailv over the whole of the Borough. It was pointed out that the- town had -to suffer because the local post office was understaffed. Mr Tippler’s motion was earned.
