SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
THE FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The Shannon .Borough Council met on Tuesday evening. Present-the Deputy Mayor (Cr Butt) and Grs Curran, Roberts, Thwaites, Downes, Spencer, Richardson and Hook.An apology for absence \vas receiver from his Worship the Mayor. The Secretary Wellington Automobile Club wrote stating that his Club has decided to proceed immediately . with the erection of sign boards cov- ■« ering the main ' road from Levin to Palmerston North via Shannon. In Shannon it is proposed to erect boards directing traveller's to Piaknerston Maogahao, Foxton, Levin and Wellington. The Clu|b has permission to erect these boards on. telegraph posts and desired to know if the/ Council had any objection to their proceeding with the work. The boards are about three feet by 7/inches, painted cream with black letters.-HAgreed to. A voucher for £125 towards the maintenance of roads and streets was received from the Public Works Department, the Resident Engineer (Mr Johnston) stating that the payment is made now in consideraition of the improvements already effected, but on the .understanding that additional maintenance, particularly in Grey St., be earned out.—A letter of thanks is to be forwarded to the Department. THE WATERWORKS. Mr George Jude reported that he had inspected the intake and found that the recent flood had scoured under the temporary dam that was put in front of the galleries to hold the water back to enable it to filter into the galleries. The position now is that the water in the creek at the mouth of the galleries (wiith a spell of dry , weather) mil get away on a lower level than the galleries and as reported before' there is only about three feet in length of the galleries receiv-, ing any water. There .will be no water or very little enter the galleries. At the present moment, with a lot of water in; the creek, there is enough water entering the galleries to supply the need of the town. As the logs of the temporary dam are still in position, as a temporary measure he would suggest making the dam* up again with sand bags and boulders at hand. Of course to make a permanent job, the galleries want cleaning out and groins built to hold the water over them.—Oh the motion of Cr Roberts it was decided to hold the matter over for a week and in the meantime the waterworks committee to make an inspection. RUBBISH COLLECTION. Cr Thwaites asked if the monthly collection of rubbish in the Borough was being kept up as he had learned that in some cases where rubbish had been put out it had not been removed. The Town Clerk in reply stated that it was still being, carried out on the' third Monday in each month. The Deputy Mayor said the roadmen would be instructed to keep a careful look out for any rubbish put out. FIRE BRIGADE FOR SHANNON. Cr Richardson said that now they had the water and fireplugs he would recommend that after the end of the financial year, two or three coils of hose be purchased and placed in different portions of the congested area of the town, which would thus be a great help in extinguishing fire should an. outbreak occur.
■Gr Downes thought this was a matter in which the business people should co-operate with the Council with a view to purchasing hose and forming a volunteer fire brigaide. On the motion of Gr Thwaites it was resolved that the Town Clerk call a meeting of business people and residents to discuss the question. Accounts were then, passed for payment and the meeting concluded.
