ROADS FOR MOTOR TRAFFIC.

The development of motor traffic in Britain lias created a two-fold problem —the country’s roads are generally unsuitable for vast traffic and law and custom do not make it either easy or safe because all other forms of traffic are accustomed to a careless use of the highways. "Writing in the New Statesman, Mr. R. E. Davidson says that complete remedies will take time and money/' but palliatives arc possible. “We must spend every available penny on modernising our roads. We want a definite latv of precedence at road junctions, enforced by suitable signals. We Want expert traffic supervisors with large powers, who will watch the driving at awkward points and inspire the necessary action. On Certain selected roads—chiefly the new' arteries—the vested interests of pedestrians ancj other forms of slow traffic should be icduecd or ev'en abolished, suitable alternative provision being made for them. Koad crimes need sifting by especially capable judiciaries; and clear cases should be punished so severely that no man will lightly err. Wc arc rapidly developing into a nation of motorists. When the country lad buys his motorcycle two years after leaving school, motoring has ceased to be a class issue. Within a Very few years the necessary public consent for logical motoring legislation will be eagerly given; and only the financial aspects will continue to bo anxious. Anil when at last wo can fold our arms and claim that tae prbblem of the road is solved, and'the road death roll reduced to a rational minimum, posterity will perhaps be facing a new set of transport problems created bv aeronautics. ”
