SHANNON SCHOOL.
INSUFFICIENT ACCOMMODATION. A special meeting of the Shannon School Committee was held on Wed- ■ ncsday evening to consider the posiv tiori of Standard 111 room, which has been condemned. Present: Messrs Tippler (chair), Brann, Blackwood, Burns, Lanksiiear, Brown, Roberts, \ Philip and the headmaster (Mr T. White). A letter from the Biqard's architect pointed o»ut that according to the floor space, on a 12.1't basis, it is found that there is ample accommodation for the number of children attending the school according to the numbers in September quarterly returns. The room was condemned some years ago and should not be used as a class- ■. room. Mr Atkins, -writing with reference lo the school's application far replacement of the condemned class room, stated that the Connniittee had already received a reply from the, Board's architect wherein he claims that exclusive of the condemned room, the school has ample accommodation on ;i 12ft basis. Hence the application failed to reach the order paper. The committee' would appreciate that it would be useless the Board taking any action that the Department would pmmptly turn down on the regulation. "Having inspected your school personally, I realize that] although you might have the floor space, the unequal size of your classes makes it most difficult for the. teachers to n carry out the work in an efficient manner." He suggested that the committee carefully check the floor space against the architect's figures and at the same time avail themselves of the first opportunity of asking the inspector to arrangesihe classes. If he failed it would give point to the committee's application. The chairman pointed out that the position was that standard 111 room had been condemned and they were now stuck for accommodation. The headmaster said that the closing of the room would cause inconvenience. It would, be impossible to arrange the classes'if the room was closed. Perhaps the. hi re of a hall could be arranged for in the meantime. It was pointed out that it woiuld be better to ,h,aye any inconvenience at the beginning of the year instead of later on. v Mr Blackwood said that if the headmaster cannot 'arrange the classes; it being impossible to run two classes in the one room, the Inspector be telegraphed for immediately to visit Shannon.,, and arrange the classes. On the- chairman's motion it was resolved that Standardi HI classroom be closed as per instructions from the Board. Mr Roberts moved that the/Board be written to asking them to provide a temporary class room until provision is made for a new class room, on them matter.
