lam not a miracle worker. I always disclaim any idea that I am a healer even, a wonderful man endowed with an extraordinary power. I cannot cure peopic. All 1 can do is to teach them how they can Improve themselves and then cure themselves, if a cure be possible (writes Emile Coue in a London paper). Let me explain. ll' you have a pain or if an organ in your body does not amotion properly, you nan imagine that that pain will disappear, that 'that organ will function better. And it will be so, if the thing is within iho realm of possibilities. The- other day 1 was fit tho* Albert Hall. There were 3,000 people there, and I talked to them through amplifiers. At the end twenty or thirty people came on to the platform. One man stammered, f said to the audience: "Let us sec if something can be done about this. Probably we shall be able to cure him —he and'l working together." The Self-Cure. I asked him: "t>o you know why you stammer ? It is because you fear that you will. Say now, with mc, syllable by syllable: 'I don't fear to stammer any more.'" He repeats this slowly and painfully, but without a stammer. "Now say: 'I am sure that I shall not stammer any longer,'" He accomplished this feat. "And now say: 'I am cured.'" Ho said this. "Again, louder, shout it!" I bade him. He shouted this time, and he spoke without hesitation. . Emotion seized the throng. But it is so simple. I had not cured him. He had cured himself by utilising the spiritual instrument which is within everyone of us. I had only shown him what to do. Last-week I was lecturing in a big provincial city, i have been speaking very often and for a long time. Accidentally my nose -started to bleed. }|y rfiends saw this and called in two doctors. When they arrived the bleeding had ceased. They tested my blood pressure, which was not too high 1 left for London almost immediately, and I' Ir.ul my blood pressure tested again. This time my doctor told mo: that I have the blood pressure of a man of forty. Yet lam sixtynine.
Let me make it clear that I do not suggest that my formula promises to abolish medical science, ft and medicine work hand in hand. "While practising what people call, now-Coueism, no one should give up any medicine prescribed by a doctor. Only, by repeating- my formula?, a person who is not well can put himself mto an Infinitely beiter condition to be cured than when relying - on. the art-of the physician alone. And then, of course, there are many maladies which defy the methods of the modern doctor. That is why I am so anxious i.o see auto-suggestion, which is the study of the unconscious included in the course of studies at every medical college in nil countriesMind and body cannot be separated. In the treatment of disease every illness has a mental factor. "As a man :hinkcth so he its." We are masters cf our fate in a far 'greater degree than we- imagine. Man is keeper of his body. The ills that fancy breeds are multitudinous. Thousands of people are blind, deaf, paralysed, suffer from a whole range of frightful maladies, because they believe that they are afr fiicted and cannot recover. All they suffer from is a malady of the unconscious mind, of the imagination, which is the most potent power in man. This strange state is found most commonly ■in the deaf. More than half the people who a»*e deaf are only deaf by persuasion. This state if not so frequently met with in the blind; but it exists, as this story—one of scores I can strates:Auto - Suggestion. In Js'ancy a. young woman came to me blind in the left eyo. She had been afflicted since the «igc of three. Jt turned out that when an infant she had an ailment in one eye. raid had worn a bandage over it for one year. When the bandage was taken 01T she could not. see with the eye. She h;>d contracted the habit of not seeing. She thought she -was blind in the eye, and so she was blind. But she repealed tht formula, and was cured. Literally, she released her sight through the medium of the unconscious mind. This peculiar slate runs the whole i-ainui of human feelings and func- , tions. From paralysis to stage fright I auto-suggestion is operative. The ex- [ perienoed actor is immune from stage fright because he does not think about it. One day he is tired. It j comes into his mind that he is going to get stage fright, and he gets it. F»ut when his imagination, so poweriul, more forceful than his will, .overcomes him and afflicts him with this paralysis of his faculties, he nevertheless can persuade his imagination to release him by repeating to himself: "Jt is is going, it is going,' - as long as necessary. The co-operation of priests and physicians in the development of the natural power of healing will save many lives which are now lost. But what can the priest do ? He can practise the method of auto-sugges-
lion, the curing - from within . This 1 is why so many of the clergy are interested iu nay work. This magical instrument of the unconscious is, however ,'*, dangerous* one to play with. It can perform the best and the worst services. When well applied it produces the most marvellous restilts. But 'whtn badly applied it can lend to physical find mental disasters, "As a man thinks so he is." It is ujj easy to kill one's self by repeating u suicidal formula as it is easy to heal one's self by consistently praclising auto-suggestion, or to improve ons's health and happiness, and even one's material success in lifo, by repeating to one's self twenty • times before rising and twenty times before going to sleep at night: "Day by day in every way I am getting better and better."
