THE RAILWAY CROSSING.
DEPARTMENTAL STATEMENT. in reply to a letter sent by his Worship the Mayor with reference to the blocking off the Ballance and Brvce streets crossing, the Minister of liailwavs says that at the time the Government acquired the Manawatu Line a crossing was in. existence between Ballance and Bryce streets, •but as it necessitated the crossing of. three lines of rails, the crossing was a source of danger, not only to road traffic but also to rail traffic. Arrangements were, therefore, made with "the Horowhenua County Council early in 1909 to close toe crossing and provide another crossing with cattle stops opposite Vance street. The old crossing was at first closed to all traffic but later in response to requests the' wicket gate opposite Ballance Street was replaced to be used as an access to the station platform only It appears, however, that for some considerable time pedestrians and cyclists have crossed'the station vard by using the wicket gate already mentioned and the- gate from the goods yard opposite Bryce Street, Mus trespass has been. brought under the notice of the management, and owing to the risk involved notice boards have been erected warning trespassers that the v will be prosecuted. Careful consideration has been given to the Mayor's representations, but the Minister regrets' that, iii the interests of public safety, he is unable to authorise any departure at Shannon from, the Department's general practice in regard to trespass over the railway lines'.
