BUCKLEY DRAINAGE DISTRICT.
COMMISSION OPENS INQUIRY. The Commission set up to take evidence for and against the proposed alteration to the Bjinckley . drainage district commenced its sitting at Shannon on Tuesday. The commission comprised Messrs T. A. Johnson (chairman), N. H'/iYiackie, and S. A. Broadbelt. The Buckley Drainage Board was represented by Mr Taylor, the Horoiwhenua County Council by F. H. Hudson, the objectors being Messrs Spiers and Peterson and Ross Rough and Co., who were represented by Mr G. Watson (Wellington). Supporting the petition, evidence was given by Messrs Taylor, Hudson, J. McGill, R. Law and others. Messrs Campbell (Whitanui) and W. A: Spiers gave evidence in support of the objectors. The main point of the objectors wias .that, as the land is mostly used for flax growing, the banking of the land would be detrimental to this industry; and that they would receive no benefit from, the proposed schenie. The Commission then adjourned to a date to be 'fixed when further evidence will be taken, including that ot Mr F. C. Hay, engineer pi the Manawatu Oroua River Board. . The commission made an inspection of the proposed new boundar ies.
