"THESE PACIFIC ISLANDS"
OF A LONDON LADY In an address given in Christchurch last week the Hon. W. Pember Reeves related a story of an evening- when he was a guest at a dinner party in London. The amiable and highly educated hostess said to him: "Mr. Reeves, I'm going to ask you to take in thise lady, as she comes „from your -country and you will feel very much more at home."' The lady in question turned out to. be a Creole from the island of Jamaica, said Mr Reeves, to the accompaniment of hearty laughter. "However ,she was so attractive that I was willing to sit beside her under any pretext," he continued, amid3t renewed laughter, j "When I explained to' my hostess later | that Jamaica was separated from New Zealand,by the large continent of America, she declared: 'You must excuse me, but-1 do mix up these Pacific Islands.""'■•' .Once again the audience enjoyed ' Mr. .Reeves' explanation of < how some people at Home regard New Zealand and its position On the map.
