SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETINGThe first fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council for the New Year was held in the Council Tuesday evening. Present: His Wprship the Mayor and, Crs. Butt, Curran, Thwaites, Downes, Spencer, - Hioo'k and Richardson. CORRESPONDENCE. NO CROSSING. From the Department of Lands and Survey re railway crossing betvyeen Ballance and Bryce streets, advising that the, pans pfepared in 1885 by Messrs Faimerson and Scott for the Manawatu Railway Co., Ltd., do not show a crossing. All available records of the Department" and the Land Transfer office had also been searched and no crossing is indicated at this point.. TEMPORARY POSSESSION. In reply to the Council's letter oi the 2nd September last, asking permission tot remove tne dividing fence between the Post Office and the Borough Council building a distance of 18 inches on the. Post and Telegraph Department's section in order to provide a right of way to the rear of the Council's premises, the Chief Postmaster stated that it wouM appear from'the Council's correspondence with the Public Works Department, that this strip of land would be required permanently, or at least for an indefinite period. In view oi the fact that the Department may at some time require for its own purposes the whole of its land at Shannon he was directed to inform the Counctt that they mlay have the use of the portion under notice only until such time arrives and oh condition that the fence is replaced in its present position' on demand.-4t was resolved to write to the Chief Postmaster agreeing to the terms of his letter ■WATER MAIN "EAS|BMEN|T.
A petition was received from residents of, Stafford Street through whose properties the water main is laid asking the Council if. there is not a reduction in the water rate, on these properties owned by the ratepayers whose signatures w ; ere at-tached.-The Mayor said he thought these property owners were entitled to some recognition as it is a matter of equity and jiustioe, stating he would be in favour of making an, allowance if the finances would per- - mit it. But the Council would not be able to do anything that would bind those who came after the present Council. He'suggested -that the question be held over until a report was received from the Finance Committee. This was agreed to. MEETING AT KOPUTAROA. * a notice of the meeting to be held at Koputaroa to discuss the linking up of the road between Koputaroa "and Shannon was received. Crs. Thwaites and Downes being- appointed to represent the Council at the meeting.. .
GENERALThe Town Clerk reported that the sum of m 12s had been received, from the Post and Telegraph Department for damage done to the footpaths while the cables were being ai ' BuiiLs cm the mm. On Or. Currian's miction it Was decided to throw the Borough roads open for grazing until further notice. It was pointed out that one or two owners in flier past had allowed young bulls to graze oh the road.—lt was decided to prosecute any owner who- 'permits bulls of any age to graze on the Borough roads. BENZINE TINI.NUISAIN.CE. Cr Downes' stated that benzine tins were not being flattened when deposited at the ruibhdshl dump, and should a flood or heavy wind come there was a likelihood of thorn being scattered over the countryside It was decided to vigorously enforce the by-law that all tins before being dumped.be flattened, by prosecuting offenders. DAMAGE AT GEMETEERY. Gr Richardson reported that a motorist had collided With the gate at the entrance to the 'cemetery and the strainer post had been broken.It was decided to engage Mr Hemmingson to put in a new post and do any necessary replalTiS.. . REPORT OF COUNCIL: CHAMBERS, The Health Officer's report the Council Chambers was referred to bv 'Or. Downes. He asked if the Council intended to deal with it that evening. The Mayor pointed .out that they had no particulars as to cost, etc., in front of them and recommended that the report be referred back to the- Housing Committee who could bring down a report to 'the •council.-This course was adopted.
