FOXTON-LEVIN ROAD.
THE WIROKINO DEVIATION. ' The main highway from Foxton to Levin has long presented a problem to the governing bodies by reason of, the difficult nature of the country in the neighbourhood of the Wirokino bridge. Proceeding from Foxton the road passes through a low swampy area, being a series of angular turns as it threads its" wiay to the river. In the winter-time a large portion of the 1 area is subject to flooding and the route becomes impassable to heavy traffic, with consequent inconvenience to business firms and motorists at that end of the district. The approach ■to the bridge itself has proved highly dangerous, it being impossible to observe whether vehicular traffic is approaching from the opposite direction. " . With a view to remedying the position to some extent the Manawatu County Council has taken steps to acquire an area of land to permit of tlie road being run along higher land and in more direct line with the bridge. At Tuesday's meeting of that body authority was received irorn the Public. Works Department to take over the land and to arrange for the paymerit of compensation.—Standard.
