THE UGLIEST MAN.
COMPETITION IN MELBOURNE. There are many ways of making money for charity, .but the latest device in Melbourne should be an imv mense success. Nominations have been called from ugly men who will "stand" as candidates for the honour of being ' Melbourne's- u&liestvin&h. Some candidates are already in the •field and are earnestly canvassing for votes. It Is said that.the two men who for years have enjoyed the honour, of being the ugliest and.second' ugliest men in Victoria.are much annoyed at the encroachment on their prerogatives. • v The second ugliest man, a Collins Street surgeon, 'has always 'asserted that his face has been a great ele--1 merit of his success. He manages to fascinate all sorts of; people. Men quote 'his views, women adore him and children crowd round him when he comes within their reach. "But now people like Mr W. A. Watt and others, ''says a Melbourne correspon»dent,; f "are making strenuous efforts to win the prize—a silver cup—and are getting together oommiittees to support their faces. Up to date Mr Watt seems to be leading favourite and he is getting great help from his committees, which are still intact after the last election. Y ■"The other candidates consider that Nature has given Mr Watt ah .unfair advantage. 1 once heard him say that he hoped he would never have the misfortune to be placed in the dock, as any jury would bonviat him without leaving the box on the evidence of his face alone." .
