PEOPLE'S PICNIC.
AT SHANNON ON NEW YEAR'S DAY Tlie organisers of the People's Picnic were unfortunate to respect to the weather conditions on New Year's Day. ' Heavy rain fell overnight, clearing off during the morning, hut a cold w;ind prevailed most of the day, making things v-ery unpleasant, arid the two combined no doubt considerably affected the attendance. •Nevertheless, under the circumstances, the attendance must be considered good, and had the day been one of sunshine there is every indication the attendance at the picnic wauld have exceeded the promoters' expectations. The sum of £H was taken at the gate, while revenue was also derived from the refreshment stall and competitions. Those of the public who attended had plenty to keep them interested, the children, in particular, entering into the sports and games with vigour, and it is safe to say they enjoyed themselves. Proceedings 'commences from the Post Office' with a procession headed by the Foxton Band, followed by decorated motor cars and bicycles and a number of cars and pedestrians, which proceeded via Balance Street to "the Recreation Grounds where on arrival a start was immediately made with the children's sports and games. Throughout the day the committee worked hard to permit of no dull moments and they are to be complimented ,on their effort. It was a happy thought on the part of the promoters when they organised the People's Picnic for a N£w Year's Day outing in Shannon, as in the past this holiday "has heen devoid of amy attractions. Arrangements were made for holding a simfilar picnic on last New Year's. Day, but owing to rain it had to. be postponed and later was cancelled owing to.. the epidemic. , Despite the cold day a large number of small children enjoyed themselves in the paddling pool. In the sports events several of the races brought close finishes. The girls: race of 150 yards for pairs of shoes donated by T. James and Go. saw three girls finish in a line from a big field of competitors and in-the run off Irene Fairburn beat May Exton on the tape. The cycle road race to Mangaoa-e and feack aroused a lot of interest, there being six starters, the scratch man Dixon doing the journey of nearly three miles In »18mins. ssecs.
