EARL ASQUITH’S FORTUNE.
LONDON, December 12. The Earl of Oxford and Asquith, who is the founder of the new Health Society, speaking at the Aldwych Club, said there was no object on which so much nonsense was written as health. “I have been on the. most distant bowing terms with doctors fogr 70 years," he said. "It is not because of any strict self-imposed regimen, but by good fortune, and the grace of Providence .that 1 have, escaped the doctors’ well-meant attentions; ‘‘There is a disquieting economic loss of probably 2 400*000,000 a year due to preventable illness, particularly ignorance v &nd carelessness in diet. Adults eat meat excessively, while children have insufficient milk. ■lt is useless to preach the laws of liealth while people are crowded into miserable, sordid and unhealthy tenements.” The new Health Society has adopted the, motto "The first wealth is health.” It includes eminent scientists, doctors and business men, ,and has launched a campaign with th!B aim of disseminating knowledge of the simple laws of health and preventing instead of curing, disease.
