WOMAN AS MAYORESS
OPPOSITION OF FATHER
Miss Lucy Dales, the only Avoman member of the Dunstable Town Council, has accepted an imitation to become the new Mayor, says a London paper. The only member to Arnte against her was her father, Alderman J. T. Dales, who stated that he will oppose her at the formal Mayoral election.
Alderman Dales, who was himself mayor six years ago, said in an interview:—“l voted against my daughter out of sympathy for herself, as I consider that she has already as much responsibility in business and at home as a normal woman can carry. I fear that her health would not stand the strain of the mayoralty I Avould not be mayor again on any account.”
Miss Dales Avas returned at the head of the poll in her Avard for the third time in six years. In her first year on the council she acted as mayoress for her father, Avho is a widoiver. No Avoirian has yet been both mayor and mayoress of the same English borough.
