THE IDEAL LIFE

Truth, beauty and goodness make the perfect trinity, and no man can be leading the ideal life unless he has these things combined in unity in him. self, declared Mr. Baldwin, the British Prime Minister, speaking on May 7 at the forty.third annual meeting of the Church Army, held at Queen’s'Hall, Langham Place, London. ‘‘Love alone is unconquerable, and it is by love alone that the nations of the -world can be brought into the paths of peace,” he proceeded. In 'England they were perhaps waking more and more to the deeper spiritual impulses and their importance in the life of the country. Historians were now beginning to see that it was not battles, but the lives of such men as Wesley and Whitfield, that were the great factors in moulding the character of the people. It was largely in the spirit which men like them breathed throughout Eng. land that tremendous impetus was given to the social, political, and religious reforms which took place in the last century. When the history of the present cen. tury came to be written, Mr. Baldwin said, the names of two men would stand out—William Booth and Wilson Carlile. They represented the spirit, ual revolt against the materialism of of the industrial system—the spiritual revolt before them by Ruskin and revolt voiced before them by Ruskin and many other against the ugliness of life and sin and blind devotion to material progress. “The more that men*give. their lives to service, Mr. Baldwin added, “the more impossible the task they try to achieve. The more that grace is given to them in the fight the brighter their faith burns, and the more they are able to radiate amongst those with whom they work in the world at large that spirit of confidence, and hope, and happiness which the world to-day needs and desires so much”
