INVENTIONS WANTED.
Recognition of the value of the I'White Line" in the middle of a streel as a means of averting- road accidents has led th o Roads Department of the British Ministry of Transport to ask the Institute of Patentees to insert in its book of wanted inventions "a process for the manufacture of permanent white pigment for the marking of black road' surfaces." A London 'Daily Mail' reporter who was shown the institute's suggestion book found in it many.interesting requests for new inventions, often abov> the signature of famous scientists. Here are som e of the requests:— Glass that will bend. Unshrinkable flannel. A noiseless aeroplane. An easily cleaned pipe. A temperance drink that will keep and yet, not pall on th 0 palate. • Greatly simplified clothing, not strange in appearance A new game of skill. An improved fog signal. A dandelion extractor. A tire grate giving the "open five" effect without wasting the major part of the fuel. Two requests by a member of a greaf American firm illustrate tt« variety of the requests:— .1. The discovery of the mechanism which enables us .to remember almost instantly in our brains without going through, the mechanism of the card index and equivalent systems. 2. An electric toaster that will cut off the current just before the toast begins to burn, or that will giv e some audible indication in time to avoid spoiling the toast.
