THREE DAYS ADRIFT IN OPEN BOAT

David Leach, aged 84 yeans,' an old resident of Waini,.- and a lad, Charles Luwson, aged 14, were reported mies■ing on Monday from Homunga Bay, a few; miles down the ©oast. They left on Monday forenoon *Qr the fishing grounds a quarter of a mile out. A sitrong wind suddenly sprang up and in an aittempt to roiw batik an oar was lost ovaiiboiard. The frail craft was practically ait the mercy of the wind and waives, and was Mown out to sea. The wind, increased to a gale during the niglit and on «Uie m'orning of the second day. The heat was miles from land ait night fall. The heroic efforts of the lad, with a single paddle, prevented the craft 'being dashed on the rocks of Mayor Island. The folLofwing afternoon, Wednesday, €iey were picked up by Mr G. Tang's launch between Mayor Island and "Hie Alderman. The boy Lawson was, feebly paddling and the* old man.was huddled in the bow 'in a semi-conscious ciondiMon. They had been adrift for thr.ee dayte iand two nights wjithout faojd or waiter.
