THE MAYOR AND THE LOAN.

ON WHICH SIDE? QUESTIONS in THE COUNCIL. Prior to the business concluding at ■the Shannon Borough Council meeting -on Tuesday) evening, Cr. -Thwaites said he wished to ask the Mayor a question in respect to- a statement lie had made on the platform at the meeting of ratepayers called to diecuss the .proposal to raise a loan for improvements -to the Council Chambers. Or. Thwaites. contended that it was,, an injustice to. the Deputy-Mayor and councillors,, when the May-or insinuated that the Council had taken advantage q-f his absence to rescind a resolution in connection with the matter. When lie returned to the Council ihe had icomplimented the Council -on wl.iait they had done during hi-s absence and had made it then appear that Ire was in accord with the Council’s decision.

The Mayor: At fhat meeting I was asked a question and I had to answer it, which I did intelligently and truthfully. I insinuated nothing. Cr. Thwaites: Have you not informed a resident (named) that/you could have swung the result oi the poll whichever way you (iked? The Mayor: I am not -going to be questioned by you or anyone else. I am only responsible for -what I say at this table. Cr. Curran; If the proposal had been carried lie would not have brought it up again, and seeing that it was lost it should toe left a-t that. Cr. Downes: What position will the Council toe in if the Health Officer makes an inspection of the building and reports against it? The Mayor; We will have to wait until that happens. Cr. Downes -said that, seeing that the Council had someone living. on the premises, be would nudve that the Council call in the Health Officer and that he be asked to inspect the Borough. building and report on it. Cr. Hook seconded the motion and it was carried, there toeing no dissentient voices. . . Cr. G<Wan contended that the caretaker should not live on the premises, that it was not the practice carried out‘toy. other Councils.
