BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY meeting. The above meeting was held on Tuesday evening in the Council Chambers. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr W.. Murdoch) and Crs. Butt, Curran, Roberts, Thwaites, Downes, Spencer, Hook and Richardson. .NEW YEAR’S DAY PICNIC. From Secretary Chamber of Commerce stating it' was proposed to hold a People’s Picnic .on New Year’s Day in which all the sports clubs and the public generally, will be asked to cooperate and he had been instructed " by the Chamber to ask if the Recre-ation-Grounds will be available on that date and if so they asked for permission to make a small charge at the gate for adults.-The Mayor moved that the ground he rolled and that the Chamber’s request be granted.— This was agreed to..
V ACQUIRING A QUARRY. From Mr fi. L. Adkin, of Levin, stating that he was prepared to visit Shannon and give i the Council the benefit of his knowledge of the geological formation, the* rock Structure and texture and any other ascertainable data, with special reference to the site, of the proposed quarry, and that his fee for services would be four guineas.—On the motion of Crs. Spencer and (Downes, it was decided to accept Mr Adkin’S offer. From H-ormvhenua County Clerk, In reference 'to the acquiring of. certain land by the Council for the purpose, of a quarry, advising that provided such necessary riork as affects his Council is carried out to the satisfaction of the County Engineer his Council was prepared to ; accede to the Council's request.—Received. ■DRIVERS: AWARD. From the secretary of the Manawatu Employers’ Association, stating that the Drivers’ union has made application to have drivers of tractors, scoops, graders, etc., included in the award and a conference between the Union and employers of such drivers will be held a,t Wellington on November 25th, and asking, if the Council desires to be specially represented at the Conference.—‘Decided not to\ take any action. , " . , TELEPHONE CONDUITS.
Hie District Telegraph Engineer for- - warded blue prints showing the position of the Department’s ducts or armoured cable laid in the Borough and asked that the same be filed in the . Council Chamber for future reference when excavating operations, are being done by or for the Council, and that when the Council issues permits to. private contractors to open the roadway they should be advised of the position of the cable. It was also suggested that , the ■Council endorse all' ' permits to private contractors, such as plumbers, stating the position of the Post and Telegraph Department’s cable. ■ If the permit' be endorsed responsibility will then toe on the con tractors.—lt was resolved that the Town Clerk carry out the instructions as set out in the letter. x VENN STREET FOOTPATH. A letter was received from residents on the east side of Venn Street, pointing out that several footpaths have been formed in the* borough, but no footpath in the street in which they reside has been formed,. As ratepayers, they request that the Council give\ this matter -their early attention, and they trust that the' necossaxy work will be pushed to completion at an early date. The letter stated that this ' street, which is in the centre of the town, is used by many pc.ople, and it would be a great convenience to everyone if such a footpath was formed. At present the only entrance to the homes is direct from the street by ways formed by the residents and ou' a-dark night therci is no little dan-, ger in negotiating the ditch at the side of the road.—-Left to the Road Committee to get on with the work and report to the Council. DOMAIN FENCE. A request tvas received from Mr . ’ Symes that be be allowed to take the wood from (the-old fence around the Domain providing he rolls the wire. —Left to the Reserves. Committee to deal -with, with power to act. SEATS IN DOMAIN.
Gr. Hqbk asked if any provision was being made to, provide seats in the Domain. Cr. Butt said that the Domain Executive had money in hand from the Carnival, some of which'no doubt would he used for 'this purpose. This was' not a Council matter. The question drewTorth a suggestion from the Mayor that the Council should place a couple of seats in the 1 reserve opposite the railway station, which he thought would be much appreciated by visitors to the town. He said Mr Hyde had given him a. quote of 30s each for iron framed seats. The Council thought the idea a good one and decided to purchase two at the price quoted. ** GENERAL. Cr. Spencer, chairman of the Hoad Committee, reported that the borough roads were in fair ofrder. He said the committee had been concentrating on getting metal out into dumps and a fair quantity was how in hand. He recommended that they now concentrate on getting the footpaths put m order. ; " Owing to the rapid growth of grass on. the borough roads iit was resolved that the question of closing the roads for grazing be left over until next meeting.
THE WATER SERVICE. Cr, Roberts reported that he had in- ■ vestigated the complaint re the state Of the water track through Mr. Spencer, • sen.i property, and found the - trouble was owing to the flushing " parts which were in concrete casings, / with the -valve on the outside, not al-
lowing the water to get away. He recommended that short • lengths of pipes be put on the valve' to bring out the water througlh the concrete' chambers.—This was agreed to. The Mayor said he thought it would be a wise thing for the Council to keep some lengths of pipe on hand which would he ready for use, should a blow out <bccu r in connection with the water mains. Councillors did not’ think there was much likelihood of such a thing happening at present, but thought the Wafer Committee should make enquiries and see What pipes are on hand. It was reported that children are in the habit of interfering with tile water taps on the mains, and as a result one locality had their water supply cut off a few days ago. The taps'-in' question are covered with a wooden top.—lf was resolved that the police be written to- and asked to try and detect the offenders.
