LEVIN MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
NOVEMBER SITTING,
The Magistrate, Mr J. Logan Stout, presided at the sitting ol the Levm Court on Thursday. The following eases were dealt with. CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. G Astridge was charged with working horses with sore shoulders. Captain Henry, Inspector for the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to \nimais, deposed that on 23rd October he was in King's Drive and saw defendant ploughing with two horses, one of which had a raw sore on the off shoulder under the. collar, and another the size of the palm of a man's hand on thei near shoulder under the collar. The horse was well over 20 years of age,' had no top teeth and the bottom ones were almost gone. The horse was in poor condition. Defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £5, with costs amounting to 235. INFRINGEMENT OF BY-LAWS. ,). Williams was charged that on the 28th October he was riding a oicycle on the footpath in Oxford Street.—Fined 5s and 7s costs. E, Pink was charged with riding a
motor cycle within the borough at a speed greater than 12 miles an hour. Constable Bagrie gave evidence that accused had ridden a motor cycle down Oxford Street, at an excessive speed—probably 25 miles an hour—whereas the toy-laws provide 12 miles an hour. Fined £1 and 7s costs. DISOBEYING AN ORDER. Fitzgerald Bell was convicted and sentenced to one month's imprisonment, with hard.laJbour, for disobedience of a maintenance order, the arrears Qf which amounted.to £l4 17s 6d. Upon payment of the arrears defendant would be released. ON LICENSED PREMISES. Andrew Zimmermann was charged with being found on licensed premises during closing hours on the 4th November. Constable Bagrie 1 said he visited the Levin Hotel at 10 p.m. on the date mentioned and found the defendant entering the hotel premises from the backyard. Accused was practically a stranger to the town and it, was- his .first offence.—Fiiied £1 and 7s costs. STRAYING CATTLE. On the information of Geo. Watson, Ranger to the liorowhenua County Council, charges of permitting cattle to stray were preferred against the following:— J. 'Sullivan, fined £l, costs 12s, for allowing two cows, and one heifer to be <at large at Koputaroa. E. Read, fined £l, costs 10s, for allowing ten cows to Wander on the /airfield- road.. C. J. Olivecrona, lined 10s, costs lis, :0r allowing a ho,se tq~ be at large on die main road, liiakara. A. \V. Small, lined' ss, costs lis for allowing ten cows to be at large at Jhau. Defendant said this was the rirsl time his cows had been out in three years. They had got out through the gate haying accidentally come upen. The Ranger corroborated this evidence and said he had never seen defendant's ooiws out "before.
E, Stakes, fined 10s, costs 15s, for blowing a cow i.o.stray at Tokomaru. H. Midgeley, fined £l, costs 15s, lor allowing twelve cows to he at lai*ge at Tokomaru. D. Milne, fined lus, costs 1.55, for allowing two cows to stray at Tokomaru. H. E. Williams, fined £l, costs 16s, lor allowing two horses to stray at Tokomaru. ' R. Harrison, fined -ss, costs. 15s, for allowing one cow to he at large at Tokomaru. G. Wemnan, fined ss, costs 15s, for allowing one cow to stray at Toko- ! maru. ' A. .Campbell, fined £l,-.costs 15s, for allowing four cows to ibe at large at Tokomaru, '3. Liggins, fined 10s, costs 15s, for allowing two cows to be at large at Tokomaru. J. H, Liggins, fined ss, costs 15s, for allowing one cow to be at large at Tokomaru. JUDGMENT SUMMONSES. Stiles and Matheson y. C. Hekenui, claim £l9 Bs.. Defendant stated he was. unable to work. Has wife owned the place where he was living, but he expected to get certain money from the Native Land Court in six months' time. The case was adjourned for six months, to enable defendant to pay the money. O. OhlsOn v. Henry Mason, claim £8 14s.—Order made for payment of £1 per month commencing on December 21. BY DEFAULT. Parker, Vincent "and. Go. v. G, B. Oddfield, claim £l2. 15s 9d, costs £2 145.-Judgment by default for amount claimed. CHANGE OF VENUE. In the case of R. J. .Acheson v. Thomas Raharuhi and 'Elizabeth Raharuhi, claim £8 6s Id, a change of venue from Takaka to Nelson was ordered.
