DRAINAGE AT WAITARERE.
PROPOSED SPECIAL RATING DISTRICT, ' At Saturday’s meeting of the Ho.rowhenua County Council a deputation consisting of the Hon. E. Newman and Messrs E. H, Kidd and W. S.. Park, wailed upon the Council in connection with the drainage of a certain area ol' land between Waitarere Road and the sea. 'The Hon. Mr Newman-said the area of land affected was 2-750 acres. ‘A considerable part of this land was now under water and was useless for grazing. Under the Comities Act, 1920, power was given to the local body to form a special rating district and strike a rate for formation and maintenance of a drain. The deputation asked the County Council to form such a rating area for which a petition had been signed. Before handing, in the petition they had wished, however, to get an Engineer’s opinion as to the feasibility of the proposal and Mr Hay had gone over his own land and surveyed, it in detail. ' The main drain went through the speaker’s. land and had cost £SOO. or £6OO, but he was making nos claim on account of that, the object being to assist the development of the- country. He gave particulars of his own land which was affected by the •water, and which if drained would be fit to carry stock and said the other properties were also detrimentally affected. They apprehended no difficulty in getting the money and they, wished tp take advantage" of the dry weather to get the work done.
The chairman asked whether part of the land was not in the Hokio Drainage district. * The Engineer said ! they districts overlapped to some extent. Mr Park said if that was so the land in the Hokio, area could be excluded. ' ' * , It was found that part of the proposed new area was in the Hokio district. The chairman said he thought the Council would be agreeable to form a district and undertake the work, more particularly as the lafid owners engineer, Mr Hay, would give them a report. Certainly formalities .had to be complied with that would take some time. It would assist the matter also that the deputation was able to arrange for the "necessary loan. The Council would be agreeable to the-formation of the district subject to the land owners agreeing to some course ms regards the land in the Hokio district. The deputation then withdrew.
