HOROWHENUA COUNTY COUNCIL.

NOVEMBER MEETING. ' The Horowhenua County Council met on .Saturday. Present—'The chairman (Mr Monk), and Crs. Barber, Whyte, Ryder, Rryant, Harkness, Broadbelt, Catley and Jensen. SANITARY CONFERENCE. The Director-General of Health, Dr. T. H. A. Valintine' requested . the Council to grant its Sanitary Inspectors leave of absence to permit their attendance at the Sanitary Inspectors’ Conference to be held in Dunedin from the 10th toi the 13th February, 1926.—Received. PRISONERS’ AID. Application -for a contribution was received from the Wellington Discharged Prisoners’ Aid Society.— Granted two guineas. GREATER MAINTENANCE GRANTSThe Public Works Department reported that the ■ contribution by the Main HighAV-ays Board to Local Bodies towards maintenance of /main highways AviU be increased for the current year from £1 for £2, to £1 for. £1 contributed by .the local body. This increased grant'is not intended to relieve local bodies of expenditure, but is to be used for the purpose of improved maintenance of the highways. The Main'HiighAvays Board intends taking steps. to exercise closer supervision than it lias hitherto, .and to see that up-to-date methods relative to maintenance of main highways is adopted. The Board will revieAV the position at the close of the current financial year, and,' if favourable, as at the present time, it hopes to carry on on the £1 for £1 basis. The chairman said the Council Avere very pleased indeed to knoAV they Avere going to get the £1 for £1 subsidy, AvhieW will bo of great holp t° all local bodies. They would, no doubt, agree tliat .this money should not be directed to relieve the. local ■bodies, but to making 'better roads, and the County’s instructions to; the engineer should 'be to see that it is kept up to the letter. '■ TOKOMARU ROADS.

Mr H, R. FarquKar; surveyor, milted a print showing the proposed excavations in Toitoi Street, Tokomaru, near where the spoil is being obtained for the formation of Aslilea and Branch Roads. By excavating as shown, some 2000 cubic yards oi spoil will be obtained free of royalty, and this portion of'Toitoi Street will he formed and graded, so that at any future date, Avhen the street is required for traffic, metalling only will be necessary. The writer desin ed the Council’s'consent to carry out the above and asked whether it Avould . undertake to 1 form and metal the 10 chain piece of County Road between the subway and the. commencement of Aslilea Road, shown on the plan of -Tokomaru as Manuka Street, so ; that Ashlea Road will he connected with existing metalled roads.—Referred to the engineer and Cr. Whyte w-i-ih power to acj, SHANNON QUARRY. The Shannon Borough. Council asked consent to ‘quarry ‘on some land near Mangaore Rower House. The land in question rises in a bluff against’ the metalled road and if was thought that part of the 'bluff bordered the road line.—Granted subject to Avork being done to the engineer’s safisfact-ion. ‘ SHANNON DRAIN.

Mr J. Swindl-ehurst, of Shannon, asked the Council to open up the drain bordering his property in Bucklev road as the drain Avas completely blocked— Referred to Cr. Barber and the Engineer with power to act.. WATER RACE FENCES. Mr J J. H. Best drew the Council’s attention 'to the condition of fences along the water-races at Te Horo. Tlie matter is to receive attention. WAIHOANGA CROSSING. Mr H. W. Stevens reported’ the tail rope on the cage at Waihoianga had worn out. Would the Council have it replaced by a new one as delay would cause inconvenience m "getting out wool. Also a landing stage on the south river-bank was broken up and carted away by Council employees and hfi would bo glad the Council to. arrange its replacement.—The engineer to take "hat steps he may deem necessary. METALLING AT MANAKAU. Mr R Bevan, of Manakau, enclosed an account for metalling a road formed by him betAveen. the County road and his gate and asking for a refund of the amount he had paid foi the Avork.— Referred to the Works Committee. DRAINING A LAGOON. Mr H. Dittmer, Main Road,.. Ohau. agreed to the removal, of. a lagoon on his and Mr A. McLeavey’s property. -Referred to the Works Committee.
