SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The abOve meeting was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present; His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Murdoch) and Crs. Butt, Curran, Thwuites, iDownes, Richardson, Hook and Spenoer. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Telegraph Engineer of the Post and Telegraph Department, stating that it is. impossible for the Department to consider the Council's claim lor damage to the surface oi the paths, as it has been rendered in general terms and the Council should submit a detailed account quoting the dates on which the work was carried out.—Referred to the Road Committee to furnish" particulars. /The Ranger, Mr J. A. Swindlehurst, wrote stating he had reconsidered his resignation and had decided to continue, his duties as Ran-ger.—Re-appointed. From A. G. Mason, re culvert over drain in front of his lionise in Vance street, stating he was only requiring a foot bridge over this drain.'and" not a traffic bridge, and at the present time lie could not see his way to pay 2s 6d pet- foot towards the erection 'Of a culvert. He reminded the Council that there is no footpath on his side of Vance Streets and his only entrance is over this drain. —Left to the Road 'Committee to attend to. HO ADMAN'S REPORT/ The Roadman (Mr F. Haley) reported as follows:—We have had the grader over Ballance, Whittaker; Stout and Clapliam Streets, Main North Road, PI immer Terrace, and. Nathan Terrace, and have finished. Ballance Street to Clapliam Street, i The sign board, has been erected at the Pound and the fence has been repaired. Have carted iV- 1 yards of .metal on to Grey, Ballance and Grand Streets and PI immer Terrace. The water tables through the cutting on East road have .been cleaned. A pipe culvert crossing Thompson street has .been puf in and the same filled in. Cut new drains and opened culvert in East road and Grand Street. A start has been made screening ni€tal ready for carting out and the tar has come to hand for the footpaths.—-Adopted.
SPECIAL QUARRY COMMITTEE'S REPORT. Cr. T. C. Thwaites submitted the following report:—We beg to report that we have further examined the rock bluff,on Mr C, Johnson's property under offer to the Council. We Hre satisfied that good metal is there in .sufficient quantity to warrant the Council iu purchasing, there being a face already exposed to a length of approximately li chains and from I 80 to 100 feet in" height. We came to the conclusion on the spot that the .£lo\ut our disposal would be spent, to lietter advantage in securing the | visit of two experts, and to this end would suggest that the Council take advantage of the offer of the Wellington City Engineer to visit shannon -and that Mr G. L, Adkin, of Levin, be also, asked to visit and report. ' . Cr. Thwaites said that after going out and making a further inspecto come. The committee were satisgranted by the Council would not go far in opening up the rock. Moreover, he "said, there was tons of rock in sight, which alone would meet the Borough requirements for some time to come. The comittee were satisfied themselves, but in the interests of the ratepayers they considered the money could be heifer spent in obtaining the services of experts to inspect the site and give a report. The Mayor said they wanted to be sure there would 'be sufficient metal to carry on with for a number of vears to warrant "the outlay. He \\6uld recommend getting the services of the Government, Geologist. ' Alter further discussion regarding the appointment of an expert to report on the site, it was resolved to endeavour to secure the services of the Government Geologist and Mr Adkin, who Will make an inspection cincf' report to the'Council.
NEW SHANNON-FOXTON ROAD. ■Tin? Mayor said lie had been informed, that the road to Shannon from the new bridge site was to join the main road further up than Mr Williams' property. He said, they wanted to bo sure on this point, as it was most important tfor Shannon that the road should he as near as (possible. He suggested that the Horowhenua County Council be .written to asking where the road was to come out and that the outlet be us near Shannon as possible. Or. Downes .said it was impossible for the road to go beyond the No. 3 site. The opinion was expressed by some i.f the councillors that they did not think it had yet been decided where the road would come otit. The Count'v Council had had two outlets under view, one to. join up on the present Foxton road, which would run through Mr Carter's property, and the other through Mr Barber's property, coming out on the Main North Ho ad. It was agreed, ae suggested by the Mayor, to write to the Horowhenua County Council. . Cr. Spencer said the Road Committee had decided to screen the metal in Spencer's creek and he had ordered a screen from Palmerston N. He thought the idea was a good one and it was'hoped to be able to take the fine metal out and dump it in suitable places; v the coarse metal would also be removed. He said they had estimated the cost of screening at Is 6d per yard and to cart it
out at 5s 6d per yard.—The committee's action was endorsed. GENERAL. It was resolved that the Road Committee be instructed to have the pipes now in Grand street removed to ■PI i miner Terrace. Crs Thwaites and Hook drew theCouncil's attention to the amount of riubbish that was accumulating in different' parts of the Borough.—lt was resolved that the Council have a "clean up" day on Monday next and that in future the third Monday in every month be fixed as the day on which rubbish will be gathered by the Council's drays. It was also agreed that in the meantime, until drums can be furnished, householders be allowed to use kerosene tins for placing rubbish in. Cr. Richardson asked ihat 10 yards of screened metal be forwarded to th,e cemetery for concreting tihe paths.—Granted. It 'was decided that the Borough roads remain open for another fortnight, with the exception of the road from the Police Station to the Albion Hotel. The accounts were then passed for payment.
