MR HOLLINGS AT MUNGAHAO.

Mr P. L. Hollings, the NationalLiberal candidate for Manawatu, was at Mangahao on Wednesday night, where he was received by a lair audience and accorded an enthusiastic reception. In the; course of-his address, Mr Hollings stated that New Zealand was now faced by two extreme dangers and was looking for a \vay «af escape from them both. On the one hand the extreme Reform Party, which represented the old Conservative ideas, legislated for thati class, while on the other hand the extreme Socialist Party, by its drastic methods, not only endangered not only its own ideals j (many of which were laudable), but ! threatened the safety of trade and inj dustry, which was"inimical to both Capital and Labour. j The National Party, which stood : between these two extremes, now presented to the country a policy framed on the basis of the old Liberal platform of Ballance and Seddon, and he (Mr Hollings) would support that, policy for the reason that it -was the only escape front two dangerous extremes, and included all that was best for the country and the people, and woujd, he hoped, pave the way for non-pa riy yon-er.nment, reconciliation of the two extremes and industrial peace. Asked why the Liberal Party had changed its "name to "National," Mr Hollings replied that he personally ha/d had nothing jto do with the change, but obviously the reason was that the Liberal rank's might toe opened wide enough to include all moderate people, who were against extremes, to form a strong National Government thai would legislate along National lines for all classes without respect to party influences. The candidate was accorded a hearty vote oS thanks with a promise that their confidence would be expressed at the poll.
