Writing to er father,- Mr. Alexander Duncan, of Brisbane. Miss Duncan states: "We left home about a quarter to nine and when w e reached the Great Western Road the naval patrols told us that the Chinese strikers had dug a trench a sort distance along the road, so we turned back. Something went wrong with the car. Mr. Mackenzie got out and was adjusting the lights when seven Chinese approached us and turned on a flashlight. Presently shots -were fired frequently. Mr. Mackenzie called to me to junip back into the car. The Chinese surrounded the ear and shot directly at us. One bullet gazed my right hand and one my chest, and another entered my left hand. I saw Mr. Macj kenzie die beside me in the car while j the firing was in progress. Prom the | little I know of driving a ear 1 was j able to get away from the assassins. j "I seized the steering wheel and j drove the car three-quarters of a mile at the rate of about 30 or 40 miles an hour. I was nearly off my head. I could not see the road and | missed a sharp turning in the darkness, so the car went on a few yards and then down into the creek. As luck would have it ; it landed nose on, so I wds not hurt, although I let go the steering wheel and hung on to to front of the car, as-well as to Mr. Mackenzie's body, to prevent its being thrown out. Then I discovered I had been shot. I was covered with j blood. I ran. back to some houses and hammered at the door. The occupants informed the police . aud I was taken to the hospital.
