Simister, of Levin, will take the niprning and evening services at the Presbyterian t Qhu.rch, owing to the 1 Rev. a. F. His Worship the Mayor <ctf shannon (Mr Murdoch) who iias been convalescing in New Plymouth after his recent illness, returned to Shannon on Tuesday last. He has received great benefit from his trip and states he is now feeling much better in health than he has done for some considerable time.

A notice appears in this issue that the Borough Council intend to lake u poll of the ratepayers lor raising a loan of- £7OO for alteration and additions to the present municipal offices. The poll will be taken on October 30th and it is understood that the Council will address the ratepayers on the matter at an early date. Despite the boisterous weather that prevailed last evening there was a fairly good attendance at the Shannon Choral Society's concert held in the Maoriland Theatre, arid those who ventured out were rewarded with a most enjoyable entertainment, a report of which we are compelled to hold oyer until our next issue. Cr. Richardson at Tuesday night's Borough Council meeting complained that|■ llae Borough jsOroet lights were not being turned on until after dark. The Town Clerk in reply stated that the Council's contract with the.' Power Board A\as that the lights should be turned oil' from sunset to sunrise. It was decided to draw the attention of the- official in charge, to the complaint. When the Shannon Borough Council were dealing with the question of granting applications for permission to erect fences on the Borough roads, Cr Spencer suggested that,in granting applications there should be a stipuv lation as to what class of fence is being erected, as there' were quite a number about the Borough at present which were most unsightly and real eyesores. Crs. agreed with' the suggestion. The totalisator figures for the Otaki race meeting totalled £36,893 10s, against £34,942 last September, and £33,545 in September, 1923, and despite the bad weather conditions. There appears to be a fair demand for calf skins in this district at present and buyers are operating freely. Consignments have gone forward to the markets of late. The Palmers ton Borough Council ha.s again declined to contribute to the Dunedin -Exhibition. The request on this occasion came from the Palmerston Chamber of Commerce.

The Horowhenua-Manawatu Referees match will be played at Levin Domain on October 3rd. If the dictum of those thirty players is "practice what you preach" the onlookers should witness a game demonstrating how Rugby should be played without any penalties or breaches. There tscems every possibility of a big crowd attending the demonstration.

The owner of a car in Palmerstoh North, who had left the vehicle in a shed over-night, found next morning that during the night some person had carefully severed the wire and removed the spot-light from the car. The enraged owner has placed the mailer in the hands of the police. "Some people would pinch the tears out of your eyes," he remarked in wrath. . '■"',
