THE MAIN ROAD.

;,Tu tiie Editor.) Dear Sir,—May 1 ask you to accept my sincere thanks for the publication of a letter which I<read with much interest in Tuesday's issue of the ‘‘News” drawing attention, to) the state of the Main lload between .Shannon and Makerua, and signed by a correspondent who aptly "terms himself “Broken Springs.” As one who travels this road at practically all horns of the day and night i welcome the publicity you gave to the above letter. The protest is long overdue; and 1 lie wonder to me is that someone has not had the courage to do su before now. It seems to me that the patience of travellers is strained to breaking-point and I am indeed surprised that ah indignation meeting has not been.' called before now, having for its purpose the “sacking of the lot,” or the “lynching of' the lot” of the Horowhen.ua Councillors and their Engineer, who evidently did not learn his road-making when the Homans were at the jab. The surface of this portion of the road in dry weather reminds one of a pepper box of miniature craters and in wet weather an endless chess-board of little lakes. There was an agitation in Shannon some time ago for swimming baths and I suggest that each individual, man, woman anti child, can have a paddling-pool of their own on the main road between here and Makerua. My “Rolls” (?) is only a two-seater, yet 1 extend an invitation to the representative of the Riding on the Council, the Engineer, or any other member, particularly now as the moon is on the wane to be nxy travelling companion over this stretch of road, and can promise them if not a pleasant, at least, a good bumping ride.—l am, etc., CONSTANT TRAVELLER.
