PRIME BEEF MEETS KEEN DEMAND
BRISK BUSINESS AT ADDINGTON.
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. At to-day’s Addington market, there was a keen sale for fat cattle, and a better one than for some weeks for store sheep, while fat sheep failed to hold recent values. Store Sheep—There was a recovery in hogget values, some well-woolled lialt-bred ewes making 39/6. The first ewes and lambs of the season are well forward and made 18/1 all counted. There was a better clearance than for some sales of good half-bred ewe hoggets at 36/- to 39/6; good half-bred wether hoggets 28/6 to 29/6, three-quarter bred 26/- to 29/3; cull three-quarter bred, .22/6 to 24/-; mixed sex three-quarter bred 26/- to 30/6; cull cross-bred 23/-; aged ewes with lambs 18/1 (all counted) good 4,6, and 8-tooth wethers, 35/6 to 37/-; lower conditioned 4,6, and S-tooth wethers 32/- to 33/11. Fat Sheep—a good-sized entry and n general easing on the last week of I/- a head. Extra, prime wethers made 56/-; (prime 46/- to 50/-: medium 42/- to 45/-; light 37/- to 41/-; extra prime ewes 47/10; prime 37/to 40/6! medium 33/- to 36/-; light, 27/- to 32/-; prime hoggets to 44/-; ordinary, 30/- to 38/-. Fat Cattle—An entry of 450 head, of which 116 were from the North Island apd several trucks from South Otago. Twelve bullocks from Mr P. Anderson (Stirling) averaged £2B/5/-, whilst one line of 28 steers from the North Island averaged £23/6/-. Some northern heifers made to £l7/17/6, and cows to £l7/7/6. A few pens of local medium-weight prime beef made to 56/- per lOOlbs. Prime medium weight 50/- to 53/-; prime heavy-* weight 47/- to 52/-; medium quality 44/- to 47/-; light 40/- to 43/-; and inferior, down to 33/- per TOOlbs. Extra prime heavy-weight steers realised £24/10/- to £2B/17/6, prime heavy weight £2l to £24; medium weight prime £l7/10/- to £2O/10/-; light £l4/10/- to £l7; rough £ll/10/- to £l4; extra prime heifers to £l7/17/6; prime £l3/10/- to £ls/10/-; ordinary £9/10/- to £l2/10/-; extra prime cows to £lB/2/6; prime £l2/15/- to £ls; medium £lO to £l2/10/-; light £8 to £B/10/-; rough £5/12/6 to
£7/10/-. t , , Vealers—A particularly short entry and anything fit for killing sold readily. GSod vealers £6 to £7; medium £4/10/6 to £5/15/-; good calves £3 to £4/5/-; small 25/- to £2/5/-. Store Cattle —A medium entry* mostly cows, which made somewhat improved prices. Three .and four vear steers made £9/17/6; heifers to £5; good cows £3 to £4/10/-, medium £2 to £2/15/-, old £l/5/- to £l/15/-, bulls to £6/15/-. Dairy Cattle —A entry of 63 head. Prices were slightly better than for last week. Best second, third and fourth ealvers (springing) made £8 to £l2/5/-; medium £5 to £7/10/-; poor £3 to £4/10/-; best springing heifers £6 to £9/5/-, others £2/10/- to £5/10/-; old cows in profit £l/10/- to £2/10/-. . . Fat Pigs—Baconers improved m price and porkers and choppers were weaker. Choppers fetched £3 to \£G/10/-; light beconers £5 to £5/10/-; heavy £6 to £7, extra heavy to £7/18/- (average price pet lb 9£d to lOd) light porkers, 48/- tc 55/-; heavy 60/- to 72/- (average price per lb Sid to 9id).
