FIVE DROWNED ON FOXTON BAR

Father, Two Sons and Two Daughters FLATTIE SWAMPS IN ROUGH WATER. MAORI WOMAN SOLE WITNESS OF TRAGEDY. (Palmerston Times.) One Qf the most terrible drowning tragedies in the history of this coast occurred late on Saturday afternoon at the Manawatu Heads when, through the swamping of a "flattie" on the bar a father and four of his children lost their lives. The names of the victims were;— Thomas Staff, builder and farmer, of Foxton; aged about 46 years. Dulcie Staff, aged 19 years. Walter Staff, aged 17 years. Alfred Staff, aged 15 years.

Margaret Staff, aged 14 years. A widow and three young children, aged from two to five years, are all that remain of the family. The body of the father was recovered yesterday morning.
