LEAGUE UMPIRES WANT WIRE CAGES?

_ * POLICE ESCORTS IN MELBOURNE. MELBOURNE, August 11. The Football Umpires' Association has decided to ask the Victorian League (Australian Rules), not to appoint any ■umpires for matches to be played on either the Melbourne or North Melbourne grounds until protective wire-netting cages are provided.

These protective cages are already provided on other grounds, and, in addition, umpires are given police escorts on their wav from the dressing rooms to the field and, what is more important, back again. In a discussion on the subject at last night's meeting of the Umpires' Association some of the umpires said they would not run anv risks of attack by barrackers, and that they would rather refuse to act.
