SHANNON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
1 MONTHLY MEETING. \ The monthly meeting of the Shannon School Committee was held in ' the schoolroom on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs R. L. Tippler (chairman), Brann, Brown, Phillips, Roberts and Watkins (secretary), Apoloj gies for absence were received from Messrs Blackwood and Burns. CORRESPONDENCE. From Wellington Education Board stating that a tender has been accepted for the installation of water at the school.—Resolved to write the Board asking them to push on with the work as. the present water supply is. inadequate far the needs of the school. Replying to the recent petition urging the erection of a new residence for the headmaster instead of making additions and renovating to the present building, the secretary of the Education Board stated that at the invitation of the Board, the Department's architect, accompanied by the Clerk of Works, had thoroughly inspected the building. He assured the committee that the Board, within the limits of its means, was as sincerely desirous as the petitioners that the residence should be comfortable and in keeping wiih the school. While, therefore, the Board wished to ensure that, it was bound a,t the same time to recognise the necessity for economy and arrangement was being made 1 for enlargement and improvement. Any unsound material in the building would be removed. The Board felt sure that on completion of the work the petitioners would recognise the reasonableness of the i Board's present statement. In any case • the Board was unable to erect a new residence without the required sum. of money to pay for the. work.—Received.
From the N.Z. Bible in Schools League asking if the Committee favours Mr Isitt's Bible reading in Schools Bill.—The committee decided not to support the Bill. Quotations and lists of first aid outfits were received from the Board.— Decided to procure a large size cabinet which will carry a subsidy from the Board. Mrs J. T. Bovis forwarded balance sheeit of the recent' street "shop'' held for the purpose of raising funds towards the! purchase of a new piano for the school, whilh showed that the sum of £4l 17s lid was received, expenses, being 13s 6d, leaving a balance for the fund of £4l 4s sd. A further sum of £5 has been kindly donated "by the Shannon Choral Society, which now makes, a total of £46 4s 5d towards the' fund.—The Committee passed a hearty vote of thanks to all who had so generously contributed by work and donations towards making the effort such a success. GENRAL. One month's leave of absence was granted Mrs E. Burns. The visiting committee for the current month are Messrs Burns and Brann. A vote of thanks was passed to the staff for the assistance rendered by them on Arbor Day. .A trophy was received from Mr J.. Cherry to be given as a prize for a guessing competition in aid of the Piano Fund.—A vote of thanks was accorded Mr Che ry. (Accounts totalling £65 13s were passed for payment.
