FIERCE GALE IN AUCKLAND.
AMERICANS CUT OFF FROM SHIPS TWO THOUSAND SLEEP IN CITY. AUCKLAND, August 13. A fierce easterly gale raged all night. The. sea is so rough that the , wai'ships’ boats were able to carry a ) comparatively small number of ©lire- ) ers and men aboard. Nearly two j thousand officers and men, in addi- 1 tion to those on shore leave, had to be accommodated lor the night in the \ city, but the emergency was well met | at the Y.M.C.A. and shelter sheds on j the wharf. The men slept on chairs, j window ledges, piano tops, the cold | concrete floor or anywhere else where j there was a flat surface a foot or more \yide. Supper supplies were exhausted long before midnight, latex arrivals resorting to the inevitable chewing gum. Blankets were issued to the men.
