SHANNON TENNIS CLUB.

f - ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of members of the above Club was held in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening, the president (Mr J, T. Bovis) presiding over a fair attendiance. The annual balance sheet and president’s .report was read and adopted. PRESIDENT’S REPORT.

The retiring president (Mr J. T. Bovis) in presenting his report, stated:— As president of the Club, I take much pleasure in again reporting- that both financially and socially our 1924-25 season has been very successful and I congratulate the members, in sustaining the progress of the Club if not adding to its prosperity. Our membership at the end of the season was 64, and you will notice by the balance sheet there are no outstanding 1 feel sure that alt players have greatly appreciated the new courts, while the pavilion, which was erected at the beginning of the season at a cost of £6O, has been not only of much convenience to members, but lias, also been the means of greatly improving the social life of the club. While members gather : around a common table for a cup of tea at least once a week there must naturally arise a more friendly understanding of each other. We were ■ unfortunate in not being able to play any matches with outside clubs last • year owing to the epidemic. It is to be hoped that the club will make an effort to; institute inter-club games right from the beginning of the season this year and so make up for i lost time. ' I expressed the wish last year and I do so again that a sort of shield contest between Foxton, Levin, Ohau, Manakau and ‘Shannon Clubs should be held. I trust the ■ incoming committee will give this matter serious thought, A number of matches between opposing teams from the clubs represented by a colour was played during the season and again, as before, provided the most attractive events of the season. Last season there, was .the 1 same trouble as usual over finishing theclub handicap and championship games. This seems a matter of difficulty, to all country clubs, buit 1 sincerely hope that the incoming committee will be more successful than we have been in the past in carrying these matters on to an interesting conclusion. The congratulations of the club iare due to Miss M. Brown, W. Quurrie and E. Aim for representing the club in the Manawatu championship competitions. The cash in hand is £2 and the only account owing is tone of £l7. This must be gratifying to the members, considering that three years ago the club had a very small credit balance and decided to purchase a, section and put down four new courts, and erect a pavilion. The cost of same was over £4OO and the' \

whole has been paid with the exception of a mortgage for £l5O which was arranged. As most of you are aware I am relinquishing my duties after a few years as president and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the members for all their support and co-operation during my period of office, and to express my deep pleasure in accepting the note of appreciation which I received .some weeks ago as follows; “Oil behalf of the younger members of, the club, we the undersigned wish you to know that we fully recognise the time and work you have put in and the good that will accrue as a result of your valuable experience in so successfully arranging all details connected with the work of laying down the new courts. We also recognise the worry you have had in managing the financial affairs accompanying this work in order to leave them to us in a most satisfactory and suitable condition. We, who will derive all. benefit, thoroughly appreciate your successful efforts and tender to you our most grateful thanks.” I am. .sure Mr Burns has sometimes felt as. I have, that we were having all the financial worry and the younger players were getting all the fun without any 1 thought of how things were being paid lor, so that this note came as a very pleasant surprise and I hope that all the members who signed it and all the other members of the club will always bear in mind that the Tennis Club property is your property anti it is to your own interests to proteci that property even if it is only to see that the gate is shut for the night. I would not be doing my duty if 1 did not make special reference to the good work carried out- by our secretary Mr J. V. Burns. The balance sheet shows the amount of work that lias fallen on his shoulders and speaking for myself it has made my term of office a pleasant and easy one. Finally I wish to thank the club captain and committee for the harmonious way they have worked with me and wish the club every success for the coming season.

ELECTION OIF OFFICERS. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr J. Curran; president, Mr E. T. Moody; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Quarrie, H. Hook and A. T. White; selection committee, Mrs Laurvig, Misses M. Brown, and Williams, and Messrs Cronquest and W. Quarrie; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. Mitchell; committee, Misses Sinclair, A. Brown, A. Aim, and Williams, Mrs Pope, Messrs H. Hook, W. Quarrie, C. Cronauest and Dr. Mackereth. Four new members were fleered. It was pointed emit that the new courts wanted top dressing and tins was referred to the Committee to consider with power to act. The club intends challenging the Bulls Club for the Newman Cur, which has een held by that club for some years. It was resolved that the afternoon tea arrangements be left over until the opening day when a meeting of the lady members will be held. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the retiring president and the secretary (Messrs .1. T. Bovis and T. V. Burris) for their untiring efforts on behalf of the Club. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
