BULLS ON THE BEACH ROAD.
THE RANGER’S DIFFICULTIES. A complaint was received from a ratepayer by the, Horowhenua County Council on Saturday as to the straying stock on Beach Road, Levin, particularly in regard to a bull and some horses. The Engineer said this was a most difficult road to clear as so little of the land was fenced. The stock might come on to the road a few minutes after the Ranger had passed. Cr. Broadbelt: 1 , think it is absolutely wrong to allow bulls to stray on me roads anywhere. The chairman protested that the Council did not allow it. ; Cr. Broadbelt: 1 think we should stop it even if we don’t allow it. daughter). . Cr. Harkness: The only remedy; is to compel the. owners to fence their land. ‘ The chairman: No, the only remedy is for the ranger to impound the bull immediately he steps on the road and prosecute the owner. A resolution was passed referring the complaint to the ranger to prosecute the owners of bulls found on the roads. Cr. Catley said definite instructions had been given to the ranger at last meeting to pound on sight and proTsecutG. \ The Engineer: No, one offence and then a prosecution. Cr. Ryder said that, seeing the ranger was before the Council, he had rung up the clerk a month ago and reported certain cattle, but they _ had been on the road every night since. The Engineer said that was not so. He had gone down the particular road himself at night and saw nothing/ while the ranger had been down two or three times and could not get the stock complained of. Cr. Broadbelt complained of cows being on the main road at Ihakara, He had been in to town four times during the past fortnight, and every time had three or four cows about. The Ranger reported that he had impounded 46 head of wandering stock during the month.
