HISTORIC MANSION.

BKA.MUALL IfALL FOR SALE. FAMOUS EDWARD IV. RELIC. Hall, liramhall, Cheshire, one of the oldest and finest mansions in England, is for sale. It is possible demolition is threatened, says the owners, who state that if no purchaser is forthcoming the house will be broken up. It is believed, however, that efforts will be made to preserve the hall. Bramhall Hall has been described as one of the best examples of timber and painted window with armorial bearings. Parts of the building date from Edward IV., and other portions are said to be of earlier date.

The building was once a quadrangle, but the. west side was taken down. The chapel, which is believed to date from the time of King Richard HI., had a painted window with armorial bearings, and a representation of the. Crucifixion. Thera were also the Ten Commandments in Black Letter.

In another room is a 17th century tapestry, the work of Dorothy .Davenport, a former occupant of the hall. Formerly Bramhall was the seat of Matthew do Bromhall. It afterwards came into possession of the Davenport family. The mansion’s association with the Civil War of 1643 is described as follows by Peter Davenport, the then owner, after Captain Sankey, of the Parliamentary Force, had stolen 20 horses from the house: "They searched my house for arms and look, my howling- piece, stocking: piece and drum, with divers other things. Next, day, after they were gone, carao Prince. Rupert—liis army, by whom I lost better than a hundred pounds in linen and other goods, besides the rifling and pulling to pieces of my house.”
