N.Z. LEAGERS DEFEATED.
VANGUARD ELECTRIFIES CROWD. BUT N.S.AV. WIN 7—4. \ . (Received Sunday, 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, July 12. The New Zealand Rugby League team, though defeated by 7 —4, won all the honours in a hard, rugged conflict with New South Wales in the presence of 25.000 people. The black vanguard gave a fine exhibition throughout the contest, but the backs were unable to finalise the forwarvls' good work when the critical moment arrived. Though only one try was registered, the New Zealanders should have crossed several times. In fact, they did on two occasions, but breaches extricated the blues from awkward situations. The visitors deputed Brown to bottle up the Ncav South Wales' star winger, Wearing-, and he succeeded admirably. The visitors tackled his vis avis determinedly whenever Wearing touched the leather. Dufly Slicks the Dummy. O'Rourke instead of transferring to the wing cut in smartly on one occasion leaving Duffy to contemplate Wearing who was expeqted to receive the ball but did not. Apart from this error, whereof the most brilliant fullback could be pardoned. Dufty gave a sterling display, his powerful lino kicking and deadly tackling being reminiscent of the Doughty English full-back, Sullivan, who toured Australia and New Zealand in 1924. Wearing converted the try and then Laing in quick succession landed two penalty goals. At the interval the scores were 5—4.
Dunworth was carried from the field owing to slight concussion, Hayes replacing him. Deligrosso was injured in the right arm, but continued playing. After the spell he decided not resume and following a brief conference betwen L-atta and the New South Wales selectors Parkes was allowed to replace him.
Piay in the second session was decidedly open, but not brilliant and in consequence of effective tackling by both sides, Mouatt, O'Brien and Avery Bhone in> all-conquering invasions to NTeAv South Wales goal area, but faulty dandling checked each movement.
Beaten Winners. The blues apparently felt a beaten fiide and certainly played like one their customary enterprise and sparkle wilting under the determined spoiling tactics of the visitors. A penalty .goal for illegal tackle was converted into a goal by Wearing late m the second half, Idling subsequently failing with a comparatively easy penalty from the opponents' twenty-five. The blacks electrified the crowd with a brilliant rush on time, but a knock-on near the line spoilt a certain try. With- a little polish the visitors are expected to turn the tables in fu ture.
