NEW MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS FOR SHANNON.

VOTE OF IHE RATEPAYERS TO BE TAKEN. At Tuesday night’s meeting of the L>urough Council the' plan from the Housing Cuinmittee was received for the erection of proposed municipal buildings. A rough plan was submitted, winch provides for a twosiorey building. On the ground floor provision was.- made for two shops, one on each side, each being 24 x 16, a Council Chamber 24 x 16, reading room 29 x 16, library 20 x 16, and a ladies’ i est room and caretaker’s quarters (4 rooms and a kitchen). While on ilie top floor there would do a hall, tire floor space being 63 feet x 40 feet, and also, supper and dressing rooms. Discussion centred around the question ol whether the shops could be let .as there were already empty shops in the town. Cr. Spencer said if they erected shops it would make the building selfsupporting and therefore they wOfuld not have to draw on the rates. He said that the alternative was to erect shops on the bottom floor and \offices mi the top floor. Cr. Downes then moved and Cr. Butt seconded, “That) the plan be submitted without the big hall, tire latter to be quit down to a small meeting hail and two offices to be added and the space on the bottom floor reduced.’’ The Mayor then moved as an alternative, “That the 1 plan of building consist ol' a picture hall, municipal offices, library ajnd 'beading room, one small shop arid rooms for the caretaker. It was decided that the Housing Committee prepare rough plans of both recommendations, these to be forwarded to an. architect who will draw up proper plans and submit to the Council for their approval.
