MAORILAND PICTURES.

“CAPTAIN JANUARY.” “A nice, good, wholesome picture is ‘Captain January,’ due on Wednesday at the Maori land, fit for any child, in fact good for any child to see, and good for grown-ups, too,” writes a New' York critic. Baby Peggy’s performance of ‘‘‘Captain January,” is one of line marvels of the cinema. This mite of a child has learned the art, of expressing changing emotions with an uncanny power. She is a little Mary Pickford who can count her birthdays on one hand. Baby Peggy as a player is worthy of the excellent cast supporting her, w'hich is headed by Hobart Bosw'orth as the grim old lighthouse keeper, and Miss Irene Rich as .the lady who discovers the identity of the little waif and works out the happy ending. “THE MYSTERY OF A HANSOM CAB.”

This gripping story by an Australian wTiter has now been, filmed by an Australian star in Arthur Shirley. The Directors of Pyramid Pictures Proprietary, Limited,' with the laudable ambition of placing motion picture production on its proper footing in Australia, commissioned Arthur. Shirley to start their enterprise with his production of ‘‘The Mystery of a Hansom Cab.” The Directors’ words to him were; “Knowing that we have in you a producer with a thorough knowledge, acquired throughout years of work as star and producer in America;.and one who, from your early environment as an Australian actor, is capable of retaining our true Australian atmosphere; you are to spare neither time nor money to give ns a picture \yarthy to challenge the world’s markets.” How well, he has succeeded will be demonstrated at the local theatre on Friday night.
