King Ahasuerus gives a feast at which wine flowed freely, and no check was placed on any man ’s ( appetite. During the course of the feast, the King grows merry and orders his Queen —Vashti —to display her eharms to the guests. This was not considered improper, but the Queen refuses to comply, and is deposed by the King. (2) ESTHER IS THEN CHOSEN QUEEN. —The King summons the fairest maidens in the realm; among them is Hadassah, the ward of Mordecai the Jew, a court servant of the King. This girl is selected as Queen and is now nanted Esther. Before she appears in the presence of the King, Mordecai warns her to disguise the fact that she is a Jewess. (3) MORDECAI DISCOVERS A PLOT to murder the Jews. He entrusts Hainan with the discovery, but Hainan because he hates Mordecai, who will not bow down to him, lies to the King that it is the Jew 3 who are wanting to murder him. Then Haman secretly p'ersuades Ahasuerus to decree a massacre of the Jews. (1). THE DISMAY OP THE JEWS.—Mordecai overcomes Esther’s reluctance to intercede with the King, and she at last obtains the King’s favour and invites him, with Human, to d banquet. The latter is enraged by the contempt of Mordecai and he causes a stake to be erected whereon he will hang Mordecai on the day decreed for the massacre of the Jews. (5) THE NEXT SCENE IS DRAMATIC IN THE EXTREME.— Haman enters the feast expecting to be highly honoured by the king but to his great chagrin he is ordered to do homage to Mordecai. Esther accuses Hainan of dreadful designs against her people and the king, enraged, orders that he be hanged forthwith on the Very gallows erected for Mordecai. - • . 4 ■ (6) THE KING NOW DECREES THAT THE JEWS MAY DEPEND THEMSELVES.—This they do successfully. Haman ’3 friends are not satisfied by the turn of events ami insist on carrying out the first decree. This reacts disastrously on themselves. (7) CONCLUSION. —Institution of the Feast of Purim, This feast is an annual one commemorating this great salvation, and the story of Esther is read to those assembled. The story concludes with a short panegyric on Mordecai, who is praised as wise, kind, and well-beloved of all the Jews. 4 *. . •
