Notwithstanding the admiring comments ol' city merchants and Press the new railway tariff dally becomes moire incomprehensible to country people. Dealers and large users ol coal ill Levin have been advised of the effect the proposals will have on this trade and are astonished to find that they involve substantial increases on existing freight rates. Hitherto the Department have allowed concessions on coal over distances exceeding 75 miles. The new rates do not give long distance customers'the usual privileges which they have enjoyed for the last generation. The pre-war rate to Palmerston from the Waikato mines was 11s 3d, present rate 15s 9d, new rate 21s lid, an increase of 95 per cent. This new rate conies into operation on the 12th prox. It is certain this increase will be strongly resented by the public and dairy companies, and an effect will probable he to still further popularise electric power and heating.
“If the farmer has a telephone in bis house and a posting box at his cate he has a private post office at his own home,” was the opinion expressed by Mr ’ McNamara, AssistantSecretary to the Postal Department, in discussing, at the opening of the Ohau P. 0., the reliability and advantages of the rural delivery.
