RUGBY UNION MATTERS.
PAYMENT OF TRAVELLING EXPENSES.
"PROFESSIONAL DELEGATES."
At the general meeting of delegates to the Horowhenua Rugby Union on Monday night, the mutter of the payment of the travelling expenses of members of the Management Committee was. discussed at length. At the annual meeting a resolution was passed that the Union pay these expenses. Previously they were paid by the Clubs, but these proved too heavy for the clubs concerned, especially as other cluibs with no representative on the Management Committee escaped any payment. Mr Moynihan (Shannon) said it had cost his club last year £lB 10s for delegates expenses and they could not afford it. j Mr Carmiehael said seven meetings had cost the Union this year £l7 and they could not get on at that rate. Mr George (Hui Mai) asked why the delegates wanted their expenses. When he sat on tiie Management Committee he was not paid and he looked on it as an honour. He sometimes walked in from Kuku to attend the meetings. Mr Casey (Wanderers) suggested levying all clubs. Mr Hutchen said the year before last it cost Foxton about £l9 for these expenses. Mr Rimmer (treasurer) satfd the
Union could not pay the amount of # money the travelling was costing. It would cost about £9O at the presend pace. It was quite alright for 1 them to talk about the amateur spirit, but they should draw the line at professional. delegates. Mr Robertshaw objected to an insinuation of professionalism. Mr Hardy (Shannon) said that il the Shannon Club could find pay £l7, surely the other clubs could pay u little. Mr Mosley (Otaki) asked if the delegates had been paid in the past. Mr Procter (Levin): We were not paid for 20 years. Mr O'Rourke suggested that the clubs pay something and the Union make up the rest. Messrs Peters, Boulton and George considered their clubs could not pay anything. It took them all their time to keep going as h> was. Mr Casey (Wanderers) moved that eacli senior and junior club pay a graduated levy toward the travelling expenses, the Union to fix the amount, clubs with no senior team 10 pay on their other grades. A long discussion followed and the voting on the motion was 14 to 13 in favour, but it was declared lost as a two-thirds majority was necessary to alter the rule. Mr Eagle (Miranui) said it was all very well to talk about the honour p!' the position. . They wanted die jhest brains possible on, the management and if the expenses wore nut paid they might be debarring some such delegate who could not aiiord to . pay his own expenses. After other motions had been mov-
ed to give each delegate two gallons Of benzine per meeting and to hold the rneetings in the various centres go tHtti the Levin Clubs would have to bear- gome of the expenses, it was agreed that the Clubs make, voluntary grants to the fund for delegates expenses. A sum or £24 was promised in the room, REGISTRATION OF PLAYERS. Mr DflMeU (Tokonnaru) moved m life direction of registering all players with the secretary at the beginning of the season, tie pointed out tihat, iapart from -the team, slips, there was no record of players and find this made H possible to "pick usp" men as emergencies in a very unfair way. The meeting considered that trie matter was partly covered by the existing rules and that, in any case, there would be new rules drawn up tinder the amalgamation and the matte? could be dealt with then.
