iAn indication of the heavy taxation; imposed in France is provided by Mr J. B. Pascal, ol Palmerston. Heposted a letter to his brother, Mr Louis Pascal, who is nO\v a resident of France, and inadvertently omitted to place the required 2'd stamp on the letter. For an offence such as this hi New Zealand the recipient has to pay double the postage .rate. In France the penalty is. obviously much heavier for the envelope containing; the letter bears penalty stamps to the extent, in English money, of thirty pence in addition to the payment of 2.Jd (the amount short-stamped). ihese heavy penalties for deficient postage must make the residents of that country fairly careful.—Standard.
