SCHOOL PIANO FUND.

OVER £4O RAISED.

With a view to raising funds towards purchasing a piano for the Shannon School, a number of ladies, assisted by members of the School Committee and the headmaster i,Mr White) conducted a street stall m front of the Council Chambers on Saturday. The stall was well-loaded with a plentiful supply u; .produce, vegetables, fruit, cakes, poultry and a host of useful articles donated by parents and sympatisers, and there were competitions fur young and old. The public, recognising that the cause was a worthy one, responded most generously, .with tii • result that when evening came every tiling had been disposed of, and the day's e;ush takings totalled £4O 6s 2-Jd, which far exceeded anticipations. This must be very gratifying to those who had charge of the stall and they are to be complimented oil the manner in winch they organised the effort, which brought about such a splendid result.

The following are the results of the competitions:—Skipping (seniors) Margaret Swindhlehurst, juniors, Nola Butters; weight of roast beef dinner, 25.}lbs, W. Brown; turkey dinner, number of maize in bottle'6oo, Mrs J. Curran (Albion Hotel); Teddy Bear, name "Sambo," Joyce Blackwood; iced cake, correct weight lOlbs loz., Mrs W. Butler LOlbs 30z.; doll's bed, No. 14, Mrs Freeman; hunch of artificial flowers, No. 29, J. McMillan; cushion, No. pins 54, Mrs Warman and 0. Tippler tied. 53, the latter winning the prize; No. of steps taken iby Town Clerk from his chair in the Council Office to the Bank of New Zealand and back again 310, i. V. Burns winner with 309.

As proof of the number of covetous eyes that were cast upon the turkey and plum, pudding dinner, 239 shillings were taken for guesses of the number of maize in a bottle.
