CAUGHT WHILE ASLEEP.

GIRL OF 14 ARRESTED. WOMAN’S STARTLING FIND. Under her bed in a house- in Essex Street, Sydney, early on the morning of the 15th inst., a woman was startled to find a girl of 14 years asleep. The girl has beel arrested, and the police believe that they will now clear up a series of robberies in Ashfield and Slrathfield districts. In a fortnight of freedom the girl is said to have had an exciting time, and last Sunday narrowly escaped arrest, when a constable stopped the ’bus in which she was travelling. She was too quick for the policeman. The girl, though only 14 years of age,looks much older, and dresses as a grown woman. About two weeks ago she was sent to a reformatory in Ashfield, but ran away after being there a few days. After she had gone the head sister’s gold watch was missing. Last Sunday one of the sisters of the reformatory saw her in a 'bus, bound for the city, and rang up the police. A constable stopped the ‘bus, but the girl saw him first. Property Recovered. The occupants of the house in Essex street, where the girl had stayed some time ago, were asked to communicate with the police in the event of her return, and next morning Constables Tracey and Robinson, of No. 4 division, learned that she had come back. They were told that she had entered the house at 8 a.m., and had been found asleep under a bed. She was taken into custody. Later the constables recovered £25 worth of property in a shop in George street. With the identification of tips property the police hope to clear up a number of robberies of jewellery and clothing from private homes in Ashfield and Strathfield.
