H is an open secret (says the Mew Zealand Times) that the Reform Party is fairly sharply divided on the question of the new Leader. A section supports the Hion. J. G. Coatete, whose capacity to get things done and general business-like air have commended him to many outside Parliament. But Mr Coates, it is credibly reported, is not so warmly esteemed by the more conservative side of the party:, the term 'conservative" sufficiently explains that attitude It is also against him that his knowledge of the Standing Orders is not exactly brilliant. On the other hand, the Hon. W. Downie Stewart knows the Standing Orders intimately, and it is additionally in his favour that he has an older head lon his shoulders. The name of the Minister for Lands has been mentioned as a possible successor to Mr Massey, but he can scarcely hope, or expect, to prevail over either Mr Coates or Mr Stewart, though his promotion would be acceptable to the farming community. Rural interests, however, are not the only ones calling for governmental consideration. Meantime, we shall await with considerable curiosity the next fatelul Reform caucus. \
