SHANNON'S CELEBRA TIO'N
Anzac Day in Shannon was fittingly commemorated by a memoruij service which was held at Vie Cenotaph, Piimnier Terrace, where be-
tween 600 and 700 people gathered. a raised platiorm was erected to accommodate the members qf tne'lucai Choral society, while a number 01 seats were provided lor those who required them. Prior to the service the school children in enarge 01 tnuir teachers, together with south African war veterans and a number ol returned soldiers, assembled at the school and headed Levin Band inarched through the township to the Cenotaph.
The service opened* with the hymn "O God, our Help in Ages Past," alter which a prayer and Lord's pray-er-offered by Rev. A. F. Stewart, followed. The Shannon choral society, Jed by Mr H. Andrew, then renderethe anthem "What are These," which was followed by all present singing the hymn "The Nameless Graves." Alter a scripture reading by Mr Frank Taylor, the Choral society gave as an anthem tlie "Angelus."' The Mayor (Mr Murdoch) then briefly addressed, the congregation pointing out their duty and unity for the welfare of' thejimpire, this being ;i heritage, he said, left to us bv the men who gave their lives in' that, canse, and although they were dead the spirit remained and tne cenotaphs that have been rected were to remind us of their heroism.
A number of wreaths and flowers were then laid on the cenotaph during which the Levin Band played 'Lead Kindly Light." Those present afterwards singing the hymn "God of our Fathers."
The Rev. J. Tj. McArthur then delivered a most stirring and impressive address, taking as his text the 6th verse of the 4th chapter m the book of Joshua, "What mean ye by these stones." This address, is worthy of full publication, which we hop a to- do in a future issue. ,
After the Choral Society had rendered the . anthem "The Radiant Morn," Bandmaster Lester sounded the "Last Post" The Benediction by the Rev. Mr Farnell followed, and a memorable service was brought H a conclusion by the 'singing of the "National Anthem," and the Reveille by Bandmaster Lester.
