POWER BOARD BALL.
WONDERFU L DECORATIVE EFFECTS. One of the most successful halls held on tills coast, and certainly the best decorated hall that lias ever been seen outside the large cities, was the general verdict of those who attended the Power Board ball, held in.the Uosinos Theatre last evening. Successful as was the 1 unction from oilier aspects,' tlie great leature was tlie decoration, carried out under tne supervision of Mr W. 1L Jack, who has made a study of illumination as applied to decorative effects, aim who, amongst other places, was res-
ponsible for the decoration of the Coliseum Hall, Christchurch on the occasion of the Citizens' Bail to Viscount Jellicoe on nis arrival m New Zealand. , I From the centre of the rOol was suspended a huge inverted bell of coloured streamers, insule which a circle of lights glowed with a softened radiance. From this, wide ropes ui lycopodium extended to the walls, with all along their length various coloured lights so blended as to maim one harmonious whole, and to carry out further the colour scheme started in the bell. Between the ropes oi lights, huge moths with out-stret-ciiGfl wings, added to tlie illusion oi tropic night most realistically suggested. Fern-fronds and autumn Ullage was used to drape the walls and festoon gallery and stage and orchestral well, the latter being further arranged with an effect of soft gieen lighting. The stage, which was used as a supper room, had been decorated so as to carry out the general effect, and when, supper over, the curtain was raised, a further inverted belt was revealed, and beyond a dropscene of castellated walls and miniature lights snggesttve of perspective. Tlie completeness and harmony of the whole was a revelation in decorative art. The vari-ooloured lights were used to great effect during the dances, each set of coloured globes being operated •from a separate switch. These were ably controlled by Mr Jack, who‘achieved some remarkable effects, gradually turning off one set after another until a soft moonlight only glow, ed, to be‘ replaced a little later with the first blush of dawn, and on through the different gradations to the full blaze of light. Messrs S. Bevan and W. Phillips were joint secretaries and to them , must lie given considerable credit for the success of the evening. They desire. to extend to Messrs Eel eg and Co.; and to Messrs'Lurin and Henley, thanks, for the coloured lights supplied.
