MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
FIFTEEN CANDIDATES FOR THE COUNCIL. TWO FOR MAYORALTY. Nominations closed at noon on Wednesday last for the Shannon Mayoralty and eight seats on tne Borough Council, also for a representative on tne Horowhenua Electric Power Board. Two were received for the Mayoralty, one from the sitting Mayor (Mr jW.. Murdoch) and the other from a councillor, Mr A. E. Hyde. Fifteen nominations were received for tlie Council, only two of whom are members qI the present Council—Grs. E. Butt and Jas. Curran. Crs. Gunning, Carter, Gardner, Murray and Beard, not seeking, reelection, while Cr. Hyde is contesting the Mayoralty. Last election seventeen candidates came forward. Up till a few days ago little was heard as to who really intended to stand, but since then a good deal of interest has been aroused and now there is every indication of a record number ,of votes being recorded on election day. As the electors, we understand, will have an opportunity of hearing the views of a number of the candidates on local municipal affairs, they should be able to choose a good Council. Only one nomination was received for a representative on the Power Board, that of the present member, Mr W. H. Gunning, ’ who lias been duly re-elected.
